I picked the book of this up in a charity shop before a stag do a couple of years back. It's one of the driest books I've ever read but it was compelling nonetheless. I remember thinking that it would work better on film if it was packed full of Stanley Tucci types. Guess I need to go see it now.
The voting scenes might have been darker because the cardinals were in an enclosed space doing something secretive, and they represented a very traditional, perhaps "closed" group. I wonder if the theater you saw this in used a dimmer projection bulb. The rest of it looked quite vibrant when I saw it.
Yeah could have been a technical issue for sure! The deep reds of the robes contrast really well and I don't mind darkness in films but would just like some more contrast! Many scenes to me felt so gray and that works with something like All Quiet on the Western Front but I've grown tired of digital cleanness!
Planning to see this Sunday and more excited now after reading your review.
Seeing this tonight then reading this review!
