I thought there were some cool effects in that one, especially the last 20 minutes, which are fantastic, but it's a period piece drama that I didn't find myself really attached to!
There is a theory going around that the blandness of the lines like these is deliberately designed by Hollywood producers so that films can be easily digested by people watching while scrolling on their phone or folding laundry.
I was sceptical of the idea when I read it a while ago but then I come upon comments like these on Letterboxd (on Kubrick's 2001), and maybe there's something in it:
"What happened. Like I just sat down for 2.5 hours and couldn’t tell you what I just watched. Now granted I did spend the first 30 mins in the kitchen baking salmon but every time I looked up it was just monkeys. I thought I had clicked the wrong movie, several times."
I would give Whannell a pass here because his first two movies are fantastic, but it does feel like a ton may have been cut from the movie. I know Netflix leaked out that it wants to start having its actors say everything that's happening on screen for the very reason you said, and Blumhouse has said they are open to more AI, so scary days may possibly be ahead!
You have some fair gripes with this. Out of curiosity, what did you think of the 2010 remake?

I feel that. The gore was great but the actors didn't sell it for me

I've seen Julia Garner in a few things but had to look Christopher Abbott up.
I think she's a great actor, but she's just a bit miscast!
Think I've only seen her in "Grandma", "Perks Of Being A Wallflower" and whatever that awful coffee commercial was with Clooney.
I wanted more Wolf too, Man.
The people yearn for more Wolf!
Definitely could have done with more wolf, great review, cannot fault anything you've said.
Awh thanks for checking it out! More wolf please!!
I was also expecting it to be scarier for sure, and while I did jump a couple times, I’m struggling to really remember what for lol
It’s sadly not one of those films that grips & sticks - there was potential, but I guess that’s what happens when you show less Wolf haha
